Running Electric survey: key facts

12 March 2025

The sixth edition of our in-house survey, conducted as part of the Running Electric campaign, was carried out in November and December of 2024, and drew 2,380 respondents.* The aim of this annual survey is to understand the opinions and behaviours of potential buyers of electric vehicles (EVs), as well as the obstacles and motivations to purchase.

Many Quebecers decided to make the leap to electric in 2024, partly because of the announced planned cut in subsidies, and this was confirmed by the survey results. 49% of respondents said they had brought their purchase forward for this reason.

Electric vehicle buying intentions are also high (45%) among those respondents who have not purchased a vehicle in the last two years.

Range, vehicle availability and model diversity now important considerations

80% of respondents are convinced that the range currently offered by electric vehicles—between 350 and 500 kilometres—is sufficient to meet the travel needs of most Quebecers.

Vehicle availability, a major constraint in previous editions of the survey, now seems almost a thing of the past. 68% of electric vehicle deliveries now take less than 3 months, compared with 35% a year earlier. The growing diversity of available models also appears to have been a factor in the move to electric vehicles.

Myths still alive and well among gasoline-powered vehicle owners

Among respondents who bought a combustion-powered vehicle in the past two years, the myths surrounding electric vehicles are still very much alive. They say they didn't choose an electric car because of the high price, range or reliability. They also remain skeptical about battery life and whether or not electric vehicles are more environmentally friendly.

Interestingly, these results are the very opposite for current owners of 100% electric vehicles, 90% of whom are convinced that their vehicle more economical compared to a gasoline-powered car, 91% feel that its range can meet most travel needs of Quebec households, and 86% feel that an electric car is less polluting than a gasoline-powered car.

90% of electric vehicle owners are also very satisfied with their new electric vehicle, and the same is true for 89% of those who own used electric vehicles.

99% of electric vehicle owners would never go back to a gasoline-powered vehicle! Once again, this confirms that to test an electric vehicle means you'll end up buying one!

Energy efficiency measures

For the first time as part of the Running Electric survey, respondents were asked about the energy efficiency measures they would be willing to implement in order to consume more responsibly. 62% of respondents say they are willing to program their electric vehicle to charge at night, and 56% to select the power rating of their charging station based on their actual needs. Just 33% say they would switch to a smaller, and therefore more fuel-efficient vehicle, for the same reasons.

More and more Quebec households now fully electric

Lastly, the survey confirmed that the number of electric vehicles owned by Quebec families continues to rise. For the first time since the survey began 6 years ago, a significant number of respondents (20%) have gone 100% electric in their households.
